For the next ten weeks, I’ll be exploring a new avenue of blog topics called “Let’s Talk Culture!” If you’re new around here, feel free to read through the meaning of “Talk Story” and why it’s important to me here.
Everything and everyone has an aesthetic whether we recognize it or not. We all have reputations and images and personas we attempt to maintain through our Instagram posts, our food choices, our VSCO filters, our slang, and our relationships. Even my website has an aesthetic- simple lines, colorful photos, and my writing style tie together to become a “look” I’m attempting to portray to you, my readers.
I’m enrolled in a Communications in Pop Culture course in college this semester, and our semester-long project is to develop a series of ten blog posts where we apply Communication Theory to pop culture. Since culture is OBSESSED with appreciating beauty, I’ve chosen to highlight various Communication Theories by demonstrating how they impact our understanding and interaction with our appreciation of beauty, the aesthetic.
At the end of the ten weeks I hope to have woven a tapestry together showcasing the creativity of culture’s aesthetic that permeates our daily lives. However, I also hope to reveal the shadow that culture’s aesthetic casts, the possible impossibility of ever fully fulfilling the expectations culture cultivates.
Is there one aesthetic for all of culture? What really is true beauty? Who gets to determine the value of an aesthetic? Do aesthetics impact us everyday?
